Location description: Adelboden – there are many legends as to how this health resort in the western Bernese Oberland got its catchy name. Roughly translated from the German, it means “Noble Ground” and there is no disagreement that the name seems to suit this village very well. The wide valley – gentle and sunny - lies some 1,350 m (4,500 ft) above sea level and is well connected to the transport network. The mountains do not soar up in front of the beholder; rather they can be enjoyed from a certain distance. The area’s tranquillity was already appreciated by the first guests: “Adelboden is much visited by those in need of recuperation or suffering from poor nerves,” quoted a tourist guide book from 1898. The Engstligen Valley was of course populated long before the days of tourism and in the late Middle Ages, dwellers from nearby villages were drawn to the wildness of the valleys. The church at Adelboden dates back to 1433 and its frescos and church windows by the famous Swiss artist, Augusto Giacometti, are considered particularly beautiful. A meaningful sentence, painted on the wall, reminds the faithful: “Let us not sleep as others do”.Today, Adelboden is as much a place for those with time to take it easy as it is for the active: 56 transport facilities (185km of ski pistes, 24.5km of cross country ski trails, and a comprehensive network of footpaths) draw those with a love of the open air to the mountains- for example to the beautiful and mystic Engstligenalp, which was officially recognised as a cultural landscape of national significance, in 1996. For the alpinist, the high plateau is a starting point for countless spectacular mountain tours; the less energetic or mobile can enjoy a 2.5km circular path (suitable for wheelchairs), bizarre stone formations, a lush carpet of flowers, and bubbling water – an experience for the senses, which in combination with the re-discovered stimulation of a high-altitude climate, can also come under the category of “alpine wellness”. Both the waterfalls have been under national protection since 1948, water being a central element to the Engstligen Valley since time immemorial. From the Oeybad spring flows Adelboden Mineral Water – a natural product, exceptionally rich in calcium and magnesium. It is better not to compare Adelboden with chic Swiss health resorts, so if you are looking for the sparkle of champagne and sophisticated elegance, you are probably in the wrong place. Adelboden offers World Cup skiing, the “Vogellisi” mountain trail, cross country ski night, and the Alte Taverne with some great names from Switzerland’s music scene – spectacular highlights with far-reaching media coverage. But the “in-crowd” and precocious behaviour are not the norm; things here are more sedate, less constrained. Perhaps it is also because the locals are not celebrities – just normal, working people for whom tourism offers a secure income and the alpine arena unparalleled recreation and leisure space. Since the 1960s, sport-loving Adelboden has been firmly on the international ski map yet, paradoxically, one often hears of its “comfortable imperturbability”, so much appreciated by visitors here.
